RACP Indigenous Health Scholarship Program

Introduced in 2014, the RACP Indigenous Scholarship Program continues to support medical graduates and current RACP trainees who identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander, Māori or Pacific Islander on their chosen career path to becoming a Physician. 

The Scholarships provide a funded pathway through Basic, Advanced, Faculty or Chapter training in Australia and/or Aotearoa New Zealand.

College Indigenous Australian and Māori Health Scholarship
The Scholarships are made possible by the contributions of RACP members. 

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Scholarship
The Scholarship is made possible by Siggins Miller Consultants, Associate Professor Noel Hayman, the RACP and an anonymous benefactor.

Aotearoa Māori Health Scholarship#
The Scholarship is made possible by contributions of RACP Aotearoa New Zealand members.

Aotearoa Pacific Islander Health Scholarship#
The Scholarship is made possible by contributions of RACP Aotearoa New Zealand members.

Faculty Training Scholarships

Indigenous Australian and Māori Health Scholarship for Occupational and Environmental Medicine
The Scholarship is made possible by the Fellows of the Australasian Faculty of Occupational & Environmental Medicine.

Indigenous Australian and Māori Health Scholarship for Rehabilitation Medicine
The Scholarship is made possible by the Fellows of the Australasian Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine.

The John McLeod Indigenous Australian and Māori Health Scholarship in Public Health Medicine
The Scholarship is made possible by the Australasian Faculty of Public Health Medicine of the RACP in memory of the late Dr John McLeod, who was nationally and internationally renowned for his work in public health and his significant contribution towards improving the health status of Māori and Indigenous peoples.


Benefits

Basic Training

  • RACP training fees for the duration of the recipient's selected training program (up to 4 years)
  • Examination fees (first attempt only)
  • Attendance to trainee days and/or relevant Annual Scientific Meetings (ASMs), including RACP Congress
  • $2500 cash assistance at the beginning of the Scholarship
  • Other support as advised in the letter of offer

Advanced, Faculty and Chapter Training

  • RACP training fees for the duration of training program (up to 4 years)
  • Annual attendance to RACP Congress and/or other relevant Annual Scientific Meetings (ASMs)
  • Training related consumables including those for trainee research projects
  • Admission to Fellowship fees
  • $2500 cash assistance at the beginning of the Scholarship

Eligibility

Applicants must:

Pacific Islander applicants must be a resident of Aotearoa New Zealand. 

You must be in one of these career stages:

  • Medical graduate accepted into an RACP Basic Training Program
  • Medical graduate intending to undertake physician training*
  • Trainee currently enrolled in an RACP Basic or Advanced Training Program
  • Trainee currently enrolled in an RACP Faculty or Chapter Training Program
* The awarding of a Scholarship is conditional on acceptance into an RACP Training Program.

You must submit your application as a single PDF file. Application forms that have been altered in any way or are handwritten will not be accepted.

All referee reports must be submitted to the RACP Foundation by the application closing date by you and/or your referee(s).

Applicants will receive a confirmation email upon receipt of their application.

The Conflicts Of Interest Policy (PDF) and Privacy Policy apply to all applicants and recipients.

Selection process

Applications will be reviewed by an Award Review Panel which reflects the interests of the applicant, the interest of the relevant Division, Faculty or Chapter and a representative from the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Committee (ATSIH) and Māori Health Committee (MHC).


Proof of heritage options

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander

To confirm your Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander heritage, provide evidence in the form of one of these options:

  • A letter from an Indigenous education institution, faculty, school, department or government body or a non-government institution stating that you’ve been recognised as an Aboriginal person and/or Torres Strait Islander.

  • Proof of the College having previously recognised your Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander heritage.

  • A letter of recognition from an Indigenous Community Group or tribal elder.

  • A letter stamped with the common seal and signed by:
    • the chairperson of an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Land Council in the area where you currently live or have previously lived
    • a delegate of an incorporated Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander organisation where the majority of the governing body are Aboriginal persons and/or Torres Strait Islanders

  • Other — specify the type of proof you are providing of your Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander heritage, which is not a listed option.
Māori

To confirm your Māori heritage, provide evidence in the form of one of these options:

  • A letter from a Māori education institution, faculty, school, department or government body or a non-government institution stating that you’ve been recognised as Māori.

  • Proof of the College having previously recognised your Māori heritage.

  • A letter of recognition from an Indigenous Community Group, tribal elder or from the tribal (hapu/iwi) register.

  • A traditional presentation to the College by a whānau member^.

  • Other — specify the type of proof you are providing of your Māori heritage, which is not a listed option.
^ Opportunities to give a traditional presentation are limited. The College will endeavour to accommodate this option where possible.
Pacific Islander

To confirm your Pasifika heritage, provide evidence in the form of one of these options:

  • A letter from a Pasifika education institution, faculty, school, department or government body or a non-government institution stating that you’ve been recognised as a Pacific Island person.

  • Proof of the College having previously recognised your Pasifika heritage.

  • A letter of recognition from an Indigenous/Pasifika Community Group, Pasifika cultural leader or church minister.

  • Other — specify the type of proof you are providing of your Pasifika heritage, which is not a listed option.
