Accreditation of the Year in which the Examination is Passed

Accreditation of the Year in which the Examination is Passed (Conditional Year)

Provided that basic training has been satisfactorily completed, accreditation for advanced training of part or all of the year in which the Examination is successfully completed may be sought. This accreditation can be for either the entire year or for the latter six months.

Accreditation of the Entire Year
The following conditions must be met sequentially:

  • The trainee obtains an advanced training position and prospectively lodges an application for approval of a training program for the entire year. The application must be lodged with the College before 1 March together with 50% of the advanced training fee for the full year. If the trainee is not successful in the Examination, the fee will not be refunded.
  • The trainee passes the Examination and pays the remaining 50%t of the fee.
  • A satisfactory Supervisor's Report is received, which also indicates that preparation for the Examination has not interfered with advanced training.
  • The SAC/JSAC accepts the supervisor's recommendation regarding satisfactory performance during the year.

Each SAC/JSAC will consider accreditation of the year on the basis of the supervisor's report. Experience gained during the examination year may not be suitable for advanced training in all subspecialties and potential advanced trainees are strongly advised to contact the CAT of their chosen SAC/JSAC before applying for approval of a training program for the entire year.

Accreditation of the Latter Six Months
This allows a trainee who has completed basic training and who occupies an advanced training post to concentrate on preparation for the Examination, and if successful, to gain accreditation for the latter six months of the year.
Once the Examination has been passed, the trainee must submit an application to the College before 1 September. The application must be accompanied by the appropriate fee (50% of the fee for a full year). Applications received after 1 September will not be considered.

Accreditation of the year will be dependent upon the receipt of a satisfactory Supervisor's report form and its acceptance by the SAC/JSAC.

Under no circumstances will retrospective applications for approval of the year or part of the year in which the Examination was passed be considered.

Retrospective Accreditation without Prospective Approval

The College normally requires training to be approved prospectively. Therefore retrospective accreditation without prospective approval is only considered for those trainees who could not reasonably have applied for such approval prospectively.

In such circumstances, the CPT allows SACs/JSACs discretion in granting retrospective accreditation of up to one year of training. Applications for retrospective accreditation can only be approved where the requirements of basic training and the examination have been met. In all instances appropriate supervisors' reports are required. Periods of less than six months will not be considered.

Retrospective accreditation of training will be considered after the trainee has satisfactorily completed one year of prospectively approved training.

If the trainee decides to undertake post-FRACP training, up to one year that has previously been prospectively supervised and accredited may be acceptable for retrospective accreditation.
