Closing Date for Submission of Applications

There are two forms that are completed during each year of training. These reflect the philosophy of prospective approval and retrospective accreditation of training.

Application to Train

The first is the Application to Commence or Continue Advanced Training Program which must be prepared by the trainee in cooperation with the supervisor and signed by the supervisor (or supervisors) at the beginning of each year of training. The application is then considered by the appropriate SAC/JSAC for approval of the training program and the decision conveyed to the trainee and supervisor.

The Application form is available to download here.

Supervisor's Report

The second document is the Supervisor's Report, which is completed by the supervisor, countersigned by the trainee and returned to the SAC/JSAC before the deadline. The supervisor will discuss the contents of the report with the trainee before it is forwarded to the SAC/JSAC.

In some situations, more than one application form and more than one report form are required. For example, if a trainee is undertaking two terms under different supervisors.

Trainee are also given an opportunity to comment in a Trainee Survey form on various aspects of training including facilities for training; learning opportunities; supervision of training; and communication with the SAC/JSAC. This is not compulsory and accreditation is not dependent on submission of the forms. The Trainees are not required to discuss the surveys with their supervisors. The College assures confidentiality of the forms and their content.

Fees

An advanced training fee is payable for each year of training on submission of an application. A pro rata fee is payable if trainees are applying for part time training or a reduced period of training. Trainees who are recipients of a government research grant may apply to the College Honorary Treasurer for a reduction of fees. If additional information is required, please contact the Finance Section of the College.

Closing Dates for Submission of Applications

There are two closing dates for submission of applications:

  • 15 February. For applications received before this date, approval of the program for the entire year is possible. Accreditation will be granted if a satisfactory supervisor's report is received and other training requirements are fulfilled.
  • 31 August. For applications received after 15 February and before 31 August, only the training program for the latter six months of the clinical year is eligible for approval. For trainees submitting an application for a position in the Northern Hemisphere that runs from July to June, application for the full 12 months is acceptable. Accreditation of that period will be based on a satisfactory supervisor's report for the period and the fulfillment of other training requirements.
  • For applications received after 31 August, none of the year will be considered for approval. Consideration for retrospective accreditation can only occur under the limited circumstances given in the section above entitled 'Retrospective Accreditation without Prospective Approval'.
  • For trainees attempting the Written Examination, applications for conditional approval of the full year should be received before 31 March. Applications for approval of the latter six months of training for the examination year should be received before 31 August.
  • Retrospective accreditation of the first six months of the conditional year or of a regular year of training will not be considered if the application is received after 31 March.
