Requirements for Physician Training in Australia
  Advanced Training
gin Overview
al

The purpose of advanced training is to build on the cognitive and practical skills acquired during basic training, to produce a physician competent to provide, at consultant level, unsupervised comprehensive medical care in adult medicine, or one or more of its subspecialties.

Advanced training is a partnership between the College, represented by the SACs/JSACs, the supervisor, and the trainee, in which each partner has rights and responsibilities. The underlying philosophy of advanced training is that the trainee is self-motivated to learn. Provided there are appropriate opportunities for observation and learning, it is expected that the trainee will develop clinical skills, knowledge and attitudes by working closely with the supervisor, who will also provide formative and summative assessment. The standards required during advanced training are met by satisfying the requirements of an SAC /JSAC.

Successful completion of advanced training signals entry to a career of professional practice. Competence is maintained through lifelong learning, maintenance of skills and continuous development of new skills.
