Registration as a Basic Trainee

Standard Requirements

Registration of basic trainees is compulsory from the commencement of the second year of basic training (PGY3 ). Trainees are required to complete an Application to Register as a Basic Trainee form and lodge it with the College at the beginning of each year of basic training. A fee is payable for each year of registration. The closing date for submission of applications is 8 February.

Registration in the first year of basic training (PGY2) is voluntary. Trainees need to complete the application form and lodge it with the College. The fee will not be charged for that year of registration.

Trainees are required to indicate the terms they will be completing during the year and have the form signed by the appropriate DPT. Trainees are encouraged to consult the DPT regarding selection of terms to ensure accreditation of the terms for basic physician training. The CPT will assess the suitability of basic training when trainees apply to sit for the Examination.

A trainee who has completed basic training but is unsuccessful at the Examination has three options in the subsequent year:

  • to apply for approval of an advanced training program as a conditional advanced trainee; or
  • to interrupt or discontinue training.

Approval of Basic Training

At the time of application to sit for the Examination the CPT will assess basic training and confirm that it meets the requirements and that the trainee is eligible to sit the Examination. Trainees are advised to discuss the selection of basic training terms with their DPT as they progress in training to ensure that these will be acceptable for accreditation. If after the discussion there is doubt as to the acceptability of the terms, this should be discussed with the Executive Officer of the Training Section of the College or the Chairman of the Committee for Physician Training.
