Training in Association with Faculties
Trainees are encouraged to consider training which might lead to Fellowship of the College and a Faculty. Training in some subspecialties of adult internal medicine may be suitable for recognition towards training in one of the faculties, particularly Public Health Medicine and Rehabilitation Medicine. Conversely some parts of a faculty training program may be recognised towards College Fellowship. Trainees considering such a possibility should, in the first instance raise the matter with the Executive Officer in the Wellington Office who will facilitate liaison with the Chairs of the relevant Boards of Censors and/or the Chair of the relevant SAC. Training in Public Health MedicineTraining in public health medicine is carried out under the supervision of the Australasian Faculty of Public Health Medicine (AFPHM). This training can be done entirely with the Faculty. Those interested in undertaking training in this program in New Zealand should contact the Executive Officer of the Australasian Faculty of Public Health Medicine, P O Box 10-233, Wellington, Phone 04-472 9183, Fax 04-472 9184, e-mail judithp@afphm.org.nz Those who wish to become Fellows of the RACP and of the Faculty will be required to satisfactorily complete basic physician training and the RACP Examination. Having gained the Fellowship of the College they will then enrol in the Faculty training program. In New Zealand this is for a period of four years. Award of the FAFPHM will be dependent on satisfactory completion of the training requirements of the Faculty. Training in Rehabilitation MedicineTraining in rehabilitation medicine is undertaken under the supervision of the AFRM. This training can be done entirely with the Faculty and leads to the qualification FAFRM (see training handbook of the Faculty). Those who wish to become Fellows of the RACP and of the Faculty will be required to satisfactorily complete basic physician training and the FRACP Examination before enrolling in the Faculty training program. A committee consisting of the Faculty Board of Censors and a member of the CPT of the College will supervise training. Award of the FRACP will be dependent on satisfactory completion of advanced training and completion of the training requirements of the Faculty. Training in Occupational MedicineTrainees who wish to train in occupational medicine are supervised by the AFOM and are advised to contact the Faculty for information on the requirements for training. Australasian Chapter of Palliative MedicineThe College has recently established the Australasian Chapter of Palliative Medicine within the Division of Adult Medicine. The training and assessment program of the Chapter will recognise the "physicianly" aspects of practice in palliative medicine, the need for a wide spectrum of clinical skills and a team approach, the fact of lateral entry to palliative medicine in mid-career from other medical backgrounds and the need for a collegiate identity. In addition to consultant physician in palliative medicine, the Chapter will produce a new group of specialists who add to previous experience in other fields, training in palliative medicine at specialist level. These specialists will bring different and important skills, complementing those of consultant physicians. The Chapter has two methods of entry into training. The first is through the current College training program in palliative medicine, details of which are set out in this handbook. The second method of entry requires trainees to hold Fellowship of another clinical college or faculty. These trainees will undertake an advanced training program based on the current College program in palliative medicine, modified, where necessary, to take account of the individual's particular background. Details of this lateral mode of entry and the training program of the Chapter may be obtained from the Chapter Secretary, the Australasian Chapter in Palliative Medicine at the College. |
