Training Program
BackgroundThis section covers the general objectives of training and the core adult medicine disciplines with which all trainees should be familiar. This is an outline for the acquisition of knowledge and skills, and should not be regarded as an all-inclusive mandatory curriculum since no curriculum is ever static. The training program and Examination must take into account the evolving nature of medicine as a discipline and the changes in technology and practice that impact upon it. The curriculum outlined below is provided under General Objectives and Core Adult Medicine Disciplines. General ObjectivesThe overall aim of basic physician training is to develop a combination of knowledge and understanding, skills and attitudes which are a foundation for advanced training and for lifetime practice as a physician in adult medicine. These attributes cannot
be defined simply as a list of factual knowledge or practical skills or
competencies, as many of the objectives are related to abstract qualities,
including attitudes. However, within the following objectives, a high
level of factual knowledge is required to enable competency to be achieved.
