Basic Training

Trainees who have undertaken training in other countries and who wish to sit for the Examination, should submit details of their training for consideration by the CPT. The CPT will accept only training which is at least the equivalent of basic physician training in duration and content and undertaken in hospitals similar to those accredited in Australia and New Zealand.

Trainees intending to train overseas should seek advice from the CPT before such training is undertaken. The onus is on the trainee to satisfy the CPT that the training and supervision is satisfactory.

A maximum of 24 months of medical terms may be allowed for accreditation as basic training if undertaken at a University Teaching Hospital in the United Kingdom, United States, Canada or South Africa. A maximum of 12 months of medical terms may be allowed for accreditation towards basic training if completed in approved UTH in other countries. A list of hospitals outside Australia or New Zealand accredited by the CPT for basic training is available from the Wellington office, and on the College Internet Website.

Advanced Training

Overseas training is encouraged. Some SACs/JSACs prefer at least one year of advanced training to be carried out in Australia or New Zealand to ensure familiarity with local practices. Trainees intending to undertake advanced training outside Australia or New Zealand should enquire about the suitability of the training positions with the relevant SAC/JSAC. In all cases trainees must satisfy the SAC/JSAC that the training and supervision in overseas training programs is satisfactory and of an acceptable standard.
