Components of Clinical Training for Fellowship of RACP

Core Training

  • At least three years following completion of basic training and the FRACP Examination will be undertaken according to these guidelines;
  • A trainee is expected to undertake a three year program of combined clinical and laboratory training that will include at least one year in a recognised training position directly supervising inpatient and outpatient care (for details of clinical activities see joint program);
  • There is no prescribed period of training in immunopathology, but trainees should be familiar with all tests outlined under the joint program. Laboratory skills should not necessarily be developed to the level required for the FRCPA but all trainees should understand the principles and complexities of the assays and be able to interpret the results in detail;
  • Trainees are allowed considerable flexibility in performing an elective period of training for up to 12 months. This may be in Australia or New Zealand or overseas and may involve clinical work and/or research in an area related to immunology or another relevant area of medical practice.

Research Projects
As part of their program both joint and clinical trainees are required to submit a research project. The project may be part of a higher research degree or may deal with clinical or QA matters in the form of case reports, meeting presentations etc.

The project must have been performed during advanced training and should be submitted first to the supervisor and then to the JSAC before 31 October of the year of training. The project may take the form of published papers and should be in scientific manuscript format containing details of methodology and statistical analysis.

Presentation skills should be developed by presenting clinical or scientific projects at national meetings of relevant colleges or societies.

Training Posts
In order to broaden their experience, trainees are encouraged to rotate to different institutions if possible.

Details of training sites are available from the JSAC.
