Components of Training

Subspecialty/Elective Training

Trainees intending to subspecialise in areas such as cancer genetics, biochemical genetics or neurogenetics should spend at least a year training in general genetics and at least two years in the subspecialty area.
Two years of supervised advanced training in biochemical or molecular genetics prospectively approved by the SAC will be accredited by the SAC for advanced training if:

  • training is undertaken in a centre with a general clinical genetics service;
  • there is a significant (at least three-tenths) clinical commitment in the sub-discipline.

Two years of prospectively approved supervised advanced training in cancer genetics will be accredited by the SAC if undertaken:

  • in a centre with access to a clinical genetics service;
  • with continuing involvement in a clinical genetics training program;
  • with joint supervision by a clinical geneticist;

A detailed curriculum for cancer genetics training is being updated, based on the one used by the American Society of Clinical Oncology (J Clin Oncol 15(5): 2157-2169, May 1997). A revision of this curriculum, updated and adapted for Australasia, will be added to the Human Genetics Society of Australasia (HGSA) web site.
