Supervising Committee

Joint Specialist Advisory Committee in Immunology/Allergy (JSAC).

Definition of Specialty

The diagnosis and management of diseases affecting the immune system.

General Principles

Training in clinical immunology and allergy may lead to practice in one of three categories:

  1. Physicians providing both patient care and laboratory services:
    • Fellowships of both the RACP and Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia (RCPA) are required.
    • The joint training program is supervised by both Colleges through the JSAC.
  2. Physicians providing patient care only:
    • FRACP is required.
  3. Pathologists providing diagnostic laboratory services with minimal responsibility for patient care:
    • FRCPA is required.

Trainees for the FRCPA (joint or separate programs) should obtain information regarding supervision and examination requirements from the Registrar of the RCPA Board of Censors.

As a basis for advanced training in clinical and laboratory immunology, the trainee must acquire a detailed fundamental understanding of human immunology including the structure and function of the cellular and humoral components of the immune system; the types of tissue injury mediated by immunological and inflammatory mediators such as cytokines, complement components etc; and the mechanisms involved in the generation and control of immune responses to foreign proteins, allergens, micro organisms and autoantigens.
