ABOUT SOMANZ
The Society is named The Society of Obstetric Medicine of Australia and
New Zealand.
AIMS:
The objects of the Society are:
• to advance clinical and scientificknowledge of disorders characterised
by hypertension in pregnancy
• to foster collaboration with otherregional societies interested
in hypertension in pregnancy and relatedsubjects.
MEMBERSHIP
Membership is open to any person who is engaged inresearch, or in the
practice of the broad field of hypertension in pregnancy, or who has demonstrated
particular interest in this area.Our members are drawn from many disciplines
including Obstetricians, Physicians, Anaesthetists, Neonatologists, Scientific
Officers, Midwives and others.
With membership of the Society
goes the responsibility ofmaintaining a sustained interest in its affairs
and objectives.
THE COUNCIL
The business of the Society is conducted by a Council consisting of eight
members (including the Office Bearers). These are generally elected to
represent the interests of each of the States and New Zealand.
ACTIVITIES OF SOMANZ
The major activity of SOMANZ is the organisation of an Annual Scientific
Meeting that rotates between the States and New Zealand. This provides
a forum for presentation of research and clinica ldiscussion about
the
disorders associated with Hypertension in Pregnancy. The meetings are
small, friendly occasions with plenty of opportunities for formal
and
informal discussion. Overseas and Invited Speakers are a keyfeature of
the ASM but there are many opportunites for oral and posterpresentations
by members. the involvement of students and more juniormembers is
encouraged.
SOMANZ is also active in
an educational role. The Society publishes a Consensus document about
the "Management of Hypertension in Pregnancy" which is distributed
widely to Obstetric unitsthroughout Australasia. The Society also runs
Workshops for specific craft groups and encourages its Members to participate
in educational activities.
The SOMANZ Newsletter is
published regularly throughout the year and provides a range of information
of interest
to its members.
AFFILIATIONS
The SOMANZ is affiliated with the International Society for the Study
of Hypertension in Pregnancy.
