Description

The Rural Training Models project is multi-College initiative to support quality specialist medical training in regional, rural and remote Australia (Modified Monash Model 2-7).

In consortium with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS), the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO), the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA), and the Royal Australasian College of Medical Administrators (RACMA), the Rural Training Models project aims to support quality specialist medical training in regional, rural and remote Australia, addressing access barriers, maldistribution, and cultural sensitivity.

This project will research and design rural training models for:

  • Rural training networks
  • Rural/remote supervision
  • Culturally safe and effective outreach to Indigenous communities
  • Mentorship and orientation for trainees
  • Jurisdiction partnerships

The RACP will focus on the research and design of a Rural Training Network Model to identify key requirements for establishing successful rural training networks.

Initial desktop research will:

  • explore local and international evidence
  • evaluate of existing models
  • understand the current landscape of rural training networks within Australia
  • identify insights into barriers and solutions for rural and remote networks in Australia
  • identify key stakeholders for further discussions.

Based on the research findings, a draft model proposal will then be developed. To ensure consensus, representatives from each consortium will review and provide feedback on the proposed model in a workshop to be held in Darwin on Sunday,13 and Monday,14 October 2024. Further workshops will take place in Q1 and Q2 2025 to adjust these models to the RACP’s needs.

A total of four RACP representatives (two Fellows, two Basic and Advanced Trainees) are required to participate from Australia.

Key responsibilities and commitments:

  • Review and provide feedback on proposed models prior to the October 2024 workshop (Darwin).
  • In-person attendance at the October 2024 workshop (Darwin). Interstate participants would need to arrive in Darwin on Saturday, 12 October 2024 ahead of the workshop on Sunday 13 and Monday 14 October 2024.
  • Attend RACP Rural Training Models workshops in 2025 to assist with adjustment of proposed models for RACP’s needs (hybrid).

Your flights (economy class) and accommodation will be booked and paid for in line with the RACP’s Travel Policy (PDF). A meals allowance will also be available.

An honorarium sitting fee of A$500 per day will be payable upon conclusion of each workshop (funded by Commonwealth Flexible Approach to Training in Expanded Settings (FATES)).
