Dr Carmel Jo Pezaro (VIC) will investigate the characterisation and immune targeting of stem cells in genitourinary cancers at the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research, Austin Hospital, Heidelberg, Victoria. 
                                                                                                                                      
Vincent Fairfax Family Foundation Research Entry Scholarship ($30,000)
Dr Christine Jellis (QLD) will investigate Non invasive cardiac imaging in the detection and assessment of subclinical cardiac dysfunction and myocardial fibrosis at the University of Queensland.

Jacquot Research Entry Scholarship - 3 Year Scholarship of ($30,000 x 3 = $90,000)
Dr Marcus Boon Peng Tan (VIC) will investigate the mechanisms of atherosclerosis in apolipoprotein E deficient mice with subtotal nephrectomy at the University of Melbourne, Department of Medicine, Austin Hospital Campus, Victoria.

Dr Darren Hiu Kwong Lee (VIC) will continue to research the role of the lysosomal protein SCARB2 in kidney disease at the Macfarlane Burnet Institute for Medical Research and Public Health in Melbourne - This is Dr Lee's second year of support in this project.

Dr Suet-Wan Choy (VIC) will research the Regulation of Renin secretion by the AMP-activated protein kinase at the Austin Hospital Campus in Heidelberg, Victoria.

Dr Joseph Chiha (NSW) is investigating retinal micro vascular signs predict ischaemic heart disease subtype, The Australian Heart Eye Study at Westmead Hospital - University of Sydney.

Dr Emily Jaye Gianatti (VIC) will research Testosterone treatment in men with type 2 diabetes mellitus and borderline low total testosterone levels at Austin Health, Victoria.

ResMed Research Entry Scholarship ($30,000)
Dr Kirk Keh Huat Kee (VIC) will investigate the effects of continuous positive airways pressure on loop gain and respiratory work in congestive heart failure at the Alfred Hospital Melbourne, Victoria.

Ruth Gledhill Research Entry Scholarship ($10,000)
Dr Jacqueline Anne Curran Efforts to improve provision of culturally appropriate care to Australian indigenous youth with Type 2 Diabetes from lessons learnt in indigenous Canadian children at the University of Manitoba.

Dr Suetonia Cressida Palmer (NZ), will continue to research the detection and prediction of acute kidney injury in heart failure at the Renal Division, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston, US - This is the second year of support for Dr Palmer.

Dr Germaine Wong (NSW), will research the colorectal cancer and chronic kidney disease - early detection and quality of life at the Centre for Kidney Research, The Children's Hospital at Westmead, Sydney.

Dr Muh Geot Wong (NSW) -Dr Wong is researching the role of Cationic Independent Mannose-6-Phosphate Receptor (CI-M6PR) inhibitor n Diabetic Nephropathy at the Renal Research Laboratory, Kolling institution of Medical Research, Royal North Shore Hospital, Sydney.

Dr Robert Carroll (SA), will research the complications after renal transplantation and relation to immune phenotype at the Queen Elizabeth and Royal Adelaide Hospitals as well as the Princess Alexandra Hospital Brisbane.

Dr Anton Yariv Peleg (VIC) will research Molecular mechanisms of bacterial-fungal interactions: the potential to identify novel therapeutic targets at The Monash University, Melbourne, Victoria.

Australia Post Medical Research Fellowship ($50,000)
Dr Georgina Venetia Long (NSW) will research the clinical and biomarker correlates of melanoma chemosensitivity and epidemiological studies of outcomes in stage 4 melanoma (all incorporated into one project) at the Sydney Melanoma Unit, the Royal Prince Alfred and Westmead Hospitals, Sydney, NSW.

Dr Elgene Lim is investigating the identification of novel targets and therapeutic agents in the treatment of triple negative breast cancer at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Boston, Massachusetts, USA

Dr Dennis Lau is investigation a 3-dimensional evaluation of the electro-pathological atrial fibrillation substrate at the Maastricht University, The Netherlands.

Dr Sanjay Patel is investigating the use of induced pluripotential stem cells to augment in vivo angiogenesis at the Stanford University Cardiovascular Research Centre, California.

CSL Fellowship in Medical Research ($20,000)
Dr Craig Alastair Gedye is investigating the characterization of Ovarian Cancer Stem Cells and their Niche at the Ontario Cancer Institute, Toronto, Canada.

Cottrell Fellowship ($60,000)
Dr Gehan Roberts (VIC) Preventing learning difficulties through early intervention for working memory deficits in early childhood at The Centre for Community Child Health, Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne.

Dr Andrew Jabbour will research the contrast cardiovascular magnetic resonance in the assessment of diffuse cardiac fibrosis at The Royal Brompton Hospital, London (in collaboration with the Imperial College,
London).

RACP Australian Rheumatology Association Fellowship ($20,000)
Dr Simon Chatfield (VIC) is researching the interaction of monocyte and macrophage subsets with Th17 cells and the role of this newly described inflammatory axis in rheumatoid and related arthritis and potential as a treatment-response biomarker at Walter and Eliza Hall Institute, Melbourne.

Dr Sean O'Neil (NSW) is researching ‘S100 proteins A8, A9 and A12 in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus at Liverpool Hospital and the University of New South Wales.

Dr Arun Krishnan (NSW) is researching glucose dysmetabolism and peripheral neuropathy: the development of a novel biomarker at University of New South Wales.

Dr Benjamin Kane Dundon (VIC) will research the evaluation of Myocardial delayed contrast enhancement by 320-slice cardiac computed tomography for the prediction of myocardial viability prior to coronary revascularisation at the Monash Medical Centre, Melbourne.

Dr Peter James Psaltis is studying the myelopoietic potential of vascular adventitial progenitor cells (APCx) and their role in atherosclerosis at The Mayo Medical School in Rochester, Minnesota, USA.

Dr Daniel Lindsay Worthley will research the origin, contribution and molecular characteristics of myofibroblasts in gastric carcinogenesis at Columbia University, New York, USA.

Dr Myra Sui Yen Poon (NSW) is researching the environmental risk factors for Type 1 Diabetes complications at The Institute of Endocrinology and Diabetes, The Children's Hospital at Westmead, Sydney.

Dr Louisa Ng (VIC) will research the effectiveness of a Peer-support Intervention (lifemoves) in Motor Neurone Disease and Multiple Sclerosis at The Royal Melbourne Hospital, Victoria.

Novartis Scholarship for Sexual Health Research ($29,000)
Dr Yasmin Jayasinghe (VIC) will research the Risk Factors for early onset cervical cancer and high grade dysplasia: are there high risk groups who require earlier pap screening or vaccination at Murdoch Children's Research Institute, Royal Children's Hospital, Victoria.

Dr Sukafa Matanaicake will participate in a 3 month placement to increase her knowledge in ‘trans-thoracic echocardiography and trans-oesophageal echocardiography' in Melbourne, Victoria.

Nurse Ruth Soso will participate in a 3 month placement to increase her knowledge in high dependency care of infants in Melbourne Victoria.

AMGEN / ANZSN / University of Cambridge Fellowship in Nephrology ($15,000)
Dr Sean Flint (NT) has received this fellowship to undertake studies at Cambridge University in the Nephrology unit. Funding for this Fellowship is supported by the Jacquot Bequest which was set up to support training opportunities for Australian and New Zealand Nephrologists and is jointly administered by the ANZSN and the Royal Australasian College of Physicians.

3. The Eric Susman Prize for 2009

The Eric Susman Prize for 2009 has been awarded to Professor Ingrid Scheffer.
Professor Scheffer is an outstanding paediatric neurologist and clinician - scientist who has made a major contribution to the literature in the last two years as part of her ongoing international leadership in epilepsy research. Professor Ingrid Scheffer's work bears directly on clinical medicine and patient care. Professor Scheffer is a clinical researcher and has been recognised as such by being awarded an inaugural NH&MRC Practitioner Fellowship and more recently, the Clinical Research Recognition Award of the American Epilepsy Society in 2007. Professor Ingrid Scheffer was nominated by Professor James Best.
