2023 New Fellow Survey results

Date published:

Findings from the second annual New Fellow Survey are now available. Thank you to our New Fellows, both full-time and part-time, who shared their experiences. Ten per cent of New Fellows (1 to 2 years post training completion) responded to the survey in April/May this year, with key findings summarised below:

  • The majority (87%) of respondents indicated that they felt prepared overall for unsupervised practise.
  • Over 85% of respondents reported that they felt prepared for communication, judgement and decision making, medical expertise, teaching and learning, and ethics and professional behaviour.
  • Between 66% and 79% of respondents indicated that they felt prepared for leadership, management and teamwork, cultural safety, and quality and safety.
  • Between 45% and 56% of respondents indicated they felt prepared for health policy, systems and advocacy, and research.

Key challenges were:

  • confidence in making independent decisions
  • administration loads
  • workload expectations
  • job security.

Results from the New Fellow Survey and other external and internal feedback are used to inform and develop College initiatives to address concerns raised. These include a Health Policy, Systems and Advocacy online course, the mentor match program, new ROC communities and the rollout of supervisory training requirements.

Findings will be shared with key RACP committees, and we expect further discussion, recommendations and follow-up actions to help shape the next iteration of the survey. Read more about the survey and the findings in the 2023 New Fellow Survey Summary Report (PDF).
