Guidelines for Advanced Training in Paediatrics

Duration and Sites of Training

Advanced Training will be of at least 3 years' duration. Many SACs/JSACs divide Advanced Training into core and elective training. Most training programs require two clinical (core) years of training in the particular subspecialty, while the elective year may be spent in a related subspecialty, in research or in further core training. Each training committee provides written guidelines on the requirements for training in their subspecialty. The guidelines are found in this handbook or are available on request from the Training Section of the College.

In order for training programs to be approved the CPPT and SACs/JSACs require knowledge of the facilities available for training. In some cases the CPPT and the SACs/JSACs undertake site visits of departments and other sites for training, or use other means to obtain necessary information. Some hospital departments and other sites for training are suitable for limited periods of training only. You should, by contacting the Honorary Secretary of the CPPT or the Coordinator of Advanced Training (CAT) of your SAC training committee, ensure that the department in which you wish to train has been approved for Advanced Training. In all cases your proposed training program must be submitted and approved at the beginning of each year of training (prospectively).

Paediatric Training Committees strongly encourage experience in more than one department or other sites of training during Advanced Training.

Overseas experience is encouraged. Normally at least one year of Advanced Training is carried out in Australia to ensure familiarity with local practices.
