Guidelines for Advanced Training in Paediatrics

Purpose of Advanced Training

The purpose of Advanced Training is to build on the cognitive and practical skills acquired during Basic Training. At the end of Advanced Training, you should be a paediatrician competent to provide at consultant level, unsupervised comprehensive medical care in paediatrics or one or more of its sectional specialties.

Advanced Training is a partnership between the RACP, its supervising committees and you, the trainee, in which each partner has rights and responsibilities. The underlying philosophy of Advanced Training is that you are self-motivated to learn, and through exposure to opportunities for learning and observing, it is expected that your clinical skills, knowledge and attitudes will develop by working closely with a supervisor. Satisfactory completion of Advanced Training is recognised by admission to Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP), on the recommendation of the Board of Paediatric Censors (BPC).

Successful completion of training signals entry to a career of professional practice. Competence during professional practice is maintained through lifelong learning, maintenance of skills and development of new skills.
