Knowledge:
Recognition and understanding of the pathophysiology of:
- cardiopulmonary
arrest, cardiac and respiratory emergencies, shock
- coma and convulsions
- severe illness
- severe trauma including
burns, near drowning and intracranial injury
- poisonings and
bites
- acute life threatening
illness and death.
Skills:
- airway management
including endotracheal intubation and an understanding of principles
of mechanical ventilation
- fluid and nutritional
management
- acid/base and electrolyte
homeostasis
- insertion of intra-arterial
and intravenous catheters and intraosseous needles
- insertion of urinary
catheters and bladder puncture
- lumbar puncture
- insertion of pleural
drains
- foreign body removal:
eye, nose
- suturing of wounds
- reduction of simple
fractures and plaster application
- insertion of naso-gastric
tubes and gastric lavage
- cervical spine
immobilisation
- counselling and
breaking bad news
- recognition and
emergency management of potential child protection issues.
