Acute Care (Emergency and Intensive Care)

Knowledge:
Recognition and understanding of the pathophysiology of:

  • cardiopulmonary arrest, cardiac and respiratory emergencies, shock
  • coma and convulsions
  • severe illness
  • severe trauma including burns, near drowning and intracranial injury
  • poisonings and bites
  • acute life threatening illness and death.

Skills:

  • airway management including endotracheal intubation and an understanding of principles of mechanical ventilation
  • fluid and nutritional management
  • acid/base and electrolyte homeostasis
  • insertion of intra-arterial and intravenous catheters and intraosseous needles
  • insertion of urinary catheters and bladder puncture
  • lumbar puncture
  • insertion of pleural drains
  • foreign body removal: eye, nose
  • suturing of wounds
  • reduction of simple fractures and plaster application
  • insertion of naso-gastric tubes and gastric lavage
  • cervical spine immobilisation
  • counselling and breaking bad news
  • recognition and emergency management of potential child protection issues.
