Director of Paediatric Physician Training
The
Position
A Director of Paediatric
Physician Training (DPPT) is appointed in a University Teaching Hospital
(UTH ) and ratified by the CPPT.
The DPPT has an invaluable
coordinating, teaching, information sharing and motivating role with direct
contact with paediatric trainees at all stages of training. The primary
tasks relate to Basic Training and preparation for the FRACP Examination.
Other roles include that of a mentor and adviser for Advanced Trainees
in the hospital and liaison with supervisors of Advanced Trainees.
The College looks
to the DPPT for authoritative information concerning the appropriateness
or otherwise, of training within the hospital represented by the DPPT.
Role of Director of Paediatric Physician Training
DPPTs are asked to:
- identify persons finishing their first year of paediatrics who are
intending to embark on paediatric training
- formulate within each hospital a program of educational activities
appropriate to the training program
- liaise with the medical administrator, to ensure appropriate rostering
to comply with training requirements
- accept responsibility for ensuring that the objectives of the paediatric
training program are achieved
- make recommendations to the CPPT regarding accreditation of secondment
hospitals
- hold regular meetings of Basic Trainees to discuss training and
examination preparation
- sign the Application to Sit for the Written Examination form for
each examination candidate indicating satisfactory completion of Basic
Training
- liaise with the hospital appointee to the Committee for Examinations
(CFE) in preparing candidates for examinations
- attend examinations as a coopted examiner when held in his/her own
hospital
- counsel trainees who have failed the examination
- be involved in discussions concerning appointments within each hospital
- discuss Advanced Training with all potential candidates in their
third year of Basic Training
- be a resource person
- act as mentor to Advanced Trainees at the hospital where they work,
or direct Advanced Trainees to another suitable person who would be
prepared to act in the role
- liaise with individually appointed supervisors of Advanced Trainees
for each candidate in each specialty area within the hospital
- meet with other DPPTs from the same state twice a year to discuss
matters of relevance to Basic Training
- be prepared to be appointed as a DPPT representative on the CPPT
and to attend a CPPT meeting approximately every three years
- normally hold office for six years, and advise the Division of Paediatric
Medicine at the hospital of the need to nominate a successor.
