Accreditation For Basic Training
University
Teaching Hospital
A university teaching
hospital shall have:
- at least two departments within the Division of Paediatric Medicine
that are considered academic departments on the following criteria:
- the department is headed by a professorial or associate professorial
appointee based full-time at the hospital, and
- the department is staffed by two or more senior academic appointees
an established medical student program as well as demonstrated activity
in clinical and basic research on the basis of grants and published
papers
- at least ten medical specialty departments (Division of Paediatric
Medicine) including general paediatrics, each headed by a paediatrician
with a substantial (at least half time) appointment
- at least five registrar positions within the Division of Paediatric
Medicine occupied by basic paediatrician trainees
- a Director of Paediatric Physician Training (DPPT) who shall be assisted
by a senior registrar nominated by the Division of Paediatric Medicine,
and an established training program aimed at basic paediatric trainees
- an intensive care unit with a director having a full-time appointment.
In Basic Training you shall have a role in the longitudinal care of
their patients who are admitted to the unit
- availability of a wide range of paediatric surgical services
- an emergency department with a director holding a substantial (at
least half time) appointment. In Basic Training you shall have a role
in the initial management of patients admitted under your care through
the department
- comprehensive paediatric diagnostic laboratory and imaging facilities
including CT scanning and nuclear medicine, and staff appropriately
trained in the provision of these paediatric services
- access to and involvement in a wide range of ambulatory and community
based care facilities
- a comprehensive and accessible medical library appropriately equipped
for paediatric training.

General Paediatric Teaching Hospital
A dedicated paediatric
service which offers:
- general paediatric medicine, including inpatient and outpatient services
- some sub-specialty medical and surgical paediatric services should
be available on a regular basis
- general paediatric surgery
- a neonatal intensive care unit
- paediatric intensive care services
- paediatric emergency department services with specific services for
children
- a community paediatric, child development or mental health service
- paediatric radiology and diagnostic laboratory services
- an academic paediatric presence of at least Associate Professorial
status, and continuous involvement in medical student training
- at least four general paediatricians
- a Director of Neonatal Services
- an emergency paediatrician with specific paediatric training
- at least four paediatric registrar or resident positions at Basic
Trainee level
- at least two Advanced Trainee positions.

Secondment Hospital
A secondment hospital
shall have:
- a dedicated paediatric service, including emergency facilities for
children
- a consultant paediatrician or paediatric specialist available at all
times
- adequate supervision and structured training for paediatric trainees
- adequate educational resources for paediatrics
- adequate investigative resources for paediatrics
- flexible rotations to allow, within reason, time for attendance for
training at the "parent" teaching program.
These requirements
shall allow accreditation for secondment for Basic Training of a maximum
of 6 months in any one hospital/unit unless recommended by the DPPT and
approved by the CPPT for 12 months. Secondment for specialised neonatal
training or for community based training in developmental/community paediatrics
or child and adolescent psychiatry is considered separately. Secondment
hospitals/units shall be reviewed yearly by the DPPT and may be site visited
by the CPPT on request.
