Other Training Considerations

Interrupted Training
Normally Basic Training should be continuous. If your training program is interrupted for more than two years, the CPPT will normally require a period of training additional to the minimum requirements of the program. You may sit for the FRACP Examination during a period of interrupted training providing you have completed Basic Training.

Part-time Training
Although it is strongly recommended that you complete Basic Training full-time, part-time training may be an acceptable option, provided that any positions held are equivalent to 50% or more of full-time training. In addition, all the requirements of full-time training must be met and the total length of training must equal 36 months full-time equivalent.

Continuation of Registration
If you have completed Basic Training but are unsuccessful at the FRACP Examination, in the subsequent year you should:

  • continue to register as a trainee of the College and pay a continuation fee; or
  • apply for approval of an advanced training program as a conditional advanced trainee; or
  • interrupt or discontinue training.

Occupational Training Visa Class Trainees
If you are working in Australian hospitals under the Occupational Training Visa Class Category and you wish to join the training program of the College you are required to register with the College and to pay the appropriate fees. Your training up to the time of your application will be assessed for its equivalence to that of an Australian trainee and you will be notified of further training requirements.

Rural Training
The College wishes to promote rural training at both Basic and Advanced Training levels. There is a shortage of services provided by paediatricians in rural Australia. Rural posts offer excellent training and provide an opportunity for you to experience practice in a non-metropolitan setting.

Training in rural settings may be achieved during Basic Training by rotation to rural
Secondment Hospitals. As long as the level of supervision is adequate and the workload appropriate to training in paediatrics, this training can count towards the requirement for general paediatric medical terms during Basic Training.
