Definition of Specialty

This area of paediatric care encompasses the skill and knowledge base required to deal with acute/emergency paediatric problems, including assessment and management of the critically ill or injured child.

General Principles

  1. Advanced Training in Paediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM) will be supervised by the SAC in PEM which is appointed by the Board of Paediatric Censors (BPC), and which is responsible to the BPC via the Committee for Paediatric Physician Training (CPPT).
  2. Advanced Training in PEM will be for at least three years following satisfactory completion of basic paediatric training and the FRACP Examination in paediatrics.
  3. A minimum of 18 months in the emergency department of a tertiary referral paediatric hospital is essential.
  4. A minimum of three months but preferably six months training in paediatric intensive care or similar critical care training is essential.
  5. Twelve months of training in an adult (or mixed) emergency department accredited by the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (ACEM) is compulsory for all trainees. The purpose of this year is to provide in-depth experience with the management of acute major trauma, acute adolescent medicine, and with a range of important emergencies which occur predominantly in adults but occasionally in children.
  6. The Advanced Paediatric Life Support (APLS) course, as well as the Emergency Management of Severe Trauma (EMST) course must be completed.
  7. It is recommended that no more than two years of training be spent at any one centre.
  8. A period of training may be undertaken at a major overseas centre, if prospectively approved by the SAC PEM.
  9. Mandatory requirements must be completed, so where possible this should occur during Basic Training so as to avoid interfering with the PEM Advanced Training program
