Components of Training

Core Training

  • The training program in PEM must provide you with adequate opportunity to participate in the clinical assessment, investigation and management of acute illness and injury in children.
  • You must obtain experience in the diagnosis and management of acute paediatric disorders affecting the cardiovascular, respiratory, neurological, haematological, metabolic, endocrine, renal, skin and gastrointestinal systems. Further you must obtain experience in the diagnosis and management of acute paediatric surgical, ENT, orthopaedic and neurosurgical conditions.
  • You must gain special competence in the management of the critically ill or injured child, including techniques of resuscitation, airway management including endotracheal intubation, haemodynamic support and continuous monitoring. This includes completion of the APLS and EMST courses.
  • Your training must include experience in injury surveillance and in the formulation and evaluation of injury control programs.
  • You must obtain experience in the recognition and management of child physical and sexual abuse and an understanding of community child protection services.
  • There must be opportunities for you to be involved in the teaching of junior medical staff, nursing staff, medical students and allied health personnel (including community-based) in various aspects of acute and non-acute childhood illness and injury.
  • You are required to obtain experience and training in acute crisis counselling and in the psychological aspects of the child in the emergency department.
  • You must learn about research techniques, participate in clinical and/or laboratory research in the field of PEM, and make critical analyses of research results. These experiences must be supervised by a teacher with appropriate skills and experience in research.
  • Your program must include regular learning sessions such as reviews of morbidity, mortality, case conferences, current literature discussion groups and research meetings.
  • You must gain an understanding of disaster management, and the organisation of ambulance services including pre-hospital care of the paediatric patient.
  • You should gain experience in working in a multi-disciplinary team, coordinating the approach to management of multi-system problems and communicating with team members and referring practitioners.
  • You must gain knowledge and experience in the administrative and management aspects of the emergency department, including quality assurance, risk management, and personnel management.
