Thoracic and Sleep Medicine
Supervising CommitteeSpecialist Advisory Committee (SAC) in Thoracic and Sleep Medicine IntroductionThoracic medicine and sleep medicine are intimately related areas of medicine. If you wish to gain experience in either thoracic medicine or sleep medicine (or both), supervision of your training will be by the SAC in Thoracic and Sleep Medicine. Consequently, we encourage all trainees in both thoracic and sleep medicine to read the guidelines pertaining to both thoracic medicine and sleep in full. Sleep medicine is considered an integral part of thoracic medicine and it is strongly recommended that at least three months of core sleep medicine is completed as part of the training in thoracic medicine. Further expertise in sleep medicine may be gained during the course of thoracic training. Twelve months core sleep training is required in order for Level I sleep training to be completed, enabling the Fellow to be credentialled for reporting sleep studies. Level II training is more extensive, entails two core years of sleep training and is mandatory for a thoracic paediatrician practising predominantly in sleep, and/or overseeing a sleep laboratory (see part (b), sleep medicine guidelines). For non thoracic trainees undertaking sleep medicine Advanced Training, at least one year of their training must involve substantial experience in sleep breathing disorders and their commonly associated respiratory diseases.
