Thoracic
Medicine
Definition
of Specialty
Thoracic medicine
is a subspecialty of medicine encompassing diseases of the respiratory
system which includes the upper airway, the lung, the chest wall and the
ventilatory control system. Thoracic medicine is a cohesive blend of:
clinical knowledge of respiratory diseases; the respiratory sciences of
normal and disordered respiratory function; and experience with specialised
diagnostic techniques, tests and procedures employed in clinical assessment.
General
Principles
- Advanced Training in Paediatric Thoracic medicine will be supervised
by the SAC in Thoracic and Sleep Medicine. The major responsibility
for assessment and approval of training programs will rest with the
paediatric representatives on the SAC which will include a thoracic
paediatrician representing the subspecialty and a CPPT representative.
- Advanced Training in paediatric thoracic medicine will be of three
years duration following successful completion of basic paediatric training
and the FRACP Examination in paediatrics.
- At least two years experience in clinical thoracic medicine is necessary.
A program of one year of clinical thoracic medicine and two years of
laboratory work would only be considered in special circumstances eg
where there was a substantial element of clinical experience in the
two years of research or significant prior experience in clinical paediatric
respiratory medicine.
- If you are transferring to the SAC, you may be advised to undertake
some post-FRACP supervised training in paediatric thoracic medicine
in order to complete your three year training program
- Mandatory requirements must be completed
