Training Program in Sleep Medicine
Assessment
As per the thoracic training guidelines, if you are predominantly specialising
in paediatric sleep medicine (level II),
- you are expected to present a paper at the annual scientific meeting
of the TSANZ or the ASA.
or
- to prepare an article that is accepted for publication by a peer
reviewed journal.
Training Posts
Training should be approved in advance by the Thoracic and Sleep Medicine
SAC, and undertaken in a TSANZ approved multi-disciplinary paediatric
sleep disorders service or equivalent. Interaction with other relevant
disciplines eg, neuro-developmental medicine, or neurology should be readily
available. At least one year must be spent in a service that has substantial
expertise in sleep-breathing disorders and their commonly associated respiratory
complications. Posts will generally include:
- the equivalent of a full-time paediatric sleep paediatrician, or
paediatric thoracic paediatrician with experience in sleep medicine
- facilities for full polysomnography, MSLT, and non-invasive respiratory
support including ventilatory support (CPAP, bilevel devices and ventilation)
- regular clinical sleep meetings designed for teaching and for consultation
with related disciplines;
- library facilities with ready access to major sleep journals and
texts, and to literature search facilities such as Medline.
