How to Become a Fellow in Addiction Medicine


Either:

Training under the Chapter
OR
Appropriate Qualifications


1. Chapter Training Program

Training under the Chapter is at Advanced Training level, for three years, at least 18 months of which must be in accredited drug and alcohol positions. Entry into training recognises the backgrounds and prior experience of applicants. The Training Program is overseen by the Chapter's Education Committee and successful graduates will be awarded FAChAM.

To enter the Chapter training program applicants must be registered medical practitioners in Australia or New Zealand and hold Fellowship of one of the Colleges or Faculties:

  • Anaesthetics (FANZCA)
  • Emergency Medicine (FACEM)
  • General Practice (FRACGP and FRNZCGP)
  • Internal Medicine (FRACP)
  • Paediatrics & Child Health (FRACP)
  • Pain Medicine (FFPMANZCA)
  • Psychiatry (FRANZCP)
  • Public Health Medicine (FAFPHM)
  • Rehabilitation Medicine (FAFRM)
  • Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (FACRRM)

In the case of overseas trained specialists (including general practitioners), they must have been considered equivalent by the relevant Australasian medical college, and should apply via the Australian Medical Council (AMC).

Doctors who have completed Basic Training (including success in the FRACP Examination) of the RACP are also eligible to train under the Chapter.
