Australasian Chapter of Palliative Medicine
About the Chapter
The Chapter provides a collegiate home for palliative medicine specialists and has the following objectives:
- to promote the study of and the advancement of knowledge in the field of palliative medicine;
- to promote and encourage high levels of skill and expertise and high ethical standards in the practice of palliative medicine;
- to raise and maintain the educational standards of medical graduates wishing to enter the field of palliative medicine;
- to act as an authoritative body for the purpose of consultation in matters of educational or public interest in connection with the field of palliative medicine;
- to foster collaboration with clinicians and other persons and organisations to further or advance knowledge in the field of palliative medicine;
- to encourage research in matters connected with the field of palliative medicine.
Palliative Medicine Recognised as a medical specialty
The Commonwealth Minister for Health and Ageing has decided that Palliative Medicine should be recognised as a medical specialty. Recognition as a medical specialty is a two stage process and, in addition to the Minister's decision (stage 1), the Australian Medical Council has assessed and accredited the RACP and Chapter training programs in Palliative Medicine (stage 2).
Facilitator Training for Communications Workshop
The Australasian Chapter of Palliative Medicine (Royal Australasian College of Physicians) is looking for nine enthusiastic and committed Palliative Medicine Specialists who wish to develop their teaching skills in communication and become part of a future Australasian education faculty to train palliative medicine trainees.
Initially you would take part in a 4 day workshop in Sydney from 9th to 12th December 2008. There will also be a consolidation workshop for participants in Sydney in ~August 2009 (also for 4 days). The workshops will be facilitated by three international experts on communication skills training from the United States: Professors Anthony Back, Robert Arnold and James Tulsky (see website http://www.oncotalk.info/)
