Criteria of Entry to the AFOEM Training Program

An applicant's eligibility to undertake training/practice in Australia is dependent upon a number of factors, including your resident status, previous training and experience, and eligibility for registration with the Australian and New Zealand Medical Boards.

To be eligible to apply to become a trainee of the Australasian Faculty of Occupational & Environmental Medicine, an applicant must:

  • be a registered Medical Practitioner; that is a graduate of a Medical School recognised by a Medical Board in Australia or New Zealand and the Council of the AFOEM (or have successfully completed both Part I and Part II AMC examinations for overseas medical graduates in Australia or have successfully completed the NZREX for overseas medical graduates in New Zealand);
  • have completed at least two years of postgraduate general clinical experience;
  • have enrolled in or completed a postgraduate course at diploma level or above in occupational and environmental medicine or a related field deemed appropriate by the AFOEM Education Committee;
  • be working in an occupational and environmental medicine position for at least 10 hours a week;
  • agree to comply with the Faculty training requirements and administrative procedures for the duration of the program, including payment of all fees and timely submission of all reports including a learning plan that is developed within two (2) months of joining the training program and formative assessments as per relevant stage of training;
  • have a supervisor appointed before commencement of the training program.

Applying for AFOEM training

There are 2 annual intake dates into the AFOEM Training Program as follows:

  • 30 March for commencement on 1 July of the same year, OR
  • 30 September for commencement on 1 January of the following year.

Applications for admission into the AFOEM training program for July 2012 commencement are open until 30th March 2012.

Before you apply, you will need to contact the Director of Training (DoT) in your state/region for an initial assessment of your suitability. DoTs can also provide advice on appropriate academic courses and units of study, although the Faculty does not endorse any particular universities, tertiary education institutions or OEM courses over another.

The DoT must also sight and endorse your application before it can be submitted to the Faculty for consideration by the Teaching & Learning Subcommittee at their quarterly meetings. Once your completed application has been received, it will be presented at the next meeting for endorsement; if successful, the T&LSC will also place you into the relevant stage of training (A or B) as below:

  • Meets all general entry criteria including a minimum of two years post-graduate experience;
  • and undertakes an inception interview;
  • and has good standing in the medical profession.
  • Meets all general entry criteria;
  • and has completed Stage A including passing the Stage A exams;
  • or has completed FRACGP/FRNZCGP;
  • or has completed RACP Basic Training;
  • or is granted recognition of significant prior learning.
