Workplace-based Formative Assessments

The new AFOEM Training Curriculum, under the College-wide Physician Readiness for Expert Practice (PREP) framework came into effect from 1 January 2011. The PREP Framework introduces a common structure to all RACP training programs and aligns the PREP Basic and Advanced Training programs across the Divisions, Faculties and Chapters.

Part of PREP is the introduction of a number of workplace-based formative assessments, effective from July 2011. This is the largest and most important ongoing change to AFOEM training.

Formative assessment appraises learning-to-date to assist you to plan further learning. You don't pass or fail a formative assessment. Instead, you learn your strengths and weaknesses and you gain direction for where to invest further learning effort. The purpose is to afford you insight before you are subject to summative assessment. You are required to undertake formative assessments, but that requirement is to assist you.

Mini-Clinical Evaluation Exercise (Mini-CEX)

The Mini-CEX consists of a set of observed encounters and assesses skills such as history-taking, a focussed physical examination, or an episode of counselling. Each Mini-CEX will typically last about 15 minutes and will be observed by your Educational Supervisor where possible, or alternatively another Fellow or advanced trainee of the College. The assessor rates the process on a standard form and provides on-the-spot feedback.

Direct Observation of Field Skills (DOFS)

DOFS consists of a workstation assessment, workplace walkthrough or presentation within a workplace that is performed by you. The encounter will be observed by your Educational Supervisor, where possible, or alternatively another Fellow or Stage C trainee of the Faculty. The assessor rates the process on a standard form and provides you with on-the-spot feedback. Ideally, a DOFS encounter would be conducted in a real workplace environment but could be arranged as a simulation or virtual assessment using a set of slides or short-run moving images if necessary.

Case-based Discussion (CbD)

CbD consists of a structured discussion between you and your Educational Supervisor that occurs either face-to-face, online through video conferencing or via telephone where necessary. You select one or two sets of notes on a case with which you have been involved. These are provided to your Educational Supervisor who then questions you about several aspects of the cases (or one of the two cases).
