The Role of AFOEM Supervisor

"Educational supervisors are gatekeepers whose role is to maintain standards of training to all levels of trainees in all specialities ... An effective educational supervisor should contribute to the development of professionalism and self-confidence in the trainee and to the reduction of work-related stress especially for those in their initial years off training."

- Carolyn S. Evans
Essential Guide to Education Supervision in Postgraduate Medicine Education

AFOEM Trainees are required to have a Supervisor (previously referred to as Mentors) throughout their period of training appointed by the Regional DoT. Where possible, trainees should have at least two Supervisors (at different times) during their training program in order to promote a wider range of experiences for the trainee. Trainees should have regular contact with their Supervisor, at least monthly but preferably fortnightly.

The Supervisor must be a Fellow of the Faculty.

The main role of the Educational Supervisor is to provide formative assistance to trainees towards completion of the Faculty's requirements for Fellowship.

The Educational Supervisor is expected to:

  • guide their trainee in creating a personal learning plan
  • provide a sufficient quality and quantity of contact time with the trainee to make recommendations on an individual's training - minimal contact is monthly, reasonable contact is fortnightly or more
  • provide qualitative comments on the six-monthly Training Status Reports, regarding the trainee's achievements with learning
  • investigate the experience afforded by the employer, recognise when the diversity of the trainee's experience is limited, and advise on supplementing this with experience or training elsewhere
  • attend regional training meetings when a trainee there is presenting
  • at the time of the six-monthly review, provide the trainee with feedback in regard to progress with learning objectives, and address the standard of the case studies and workplace assessment
  • attend relevant sessions of the Annual Training and Annual Scientific meetings (ATM/ASM).
