About PREP

It is vital that the College provides an exemplary, workplace-orientated, world-standard educational, training and assessment program to equip its Fellows and trainees with the knowledge and skills required to perform as physicians and paediatricians at the highest possible standard.

Under the Physician Readiness for Expert Practice (PREP) program trainees will be able to:
Spacer
  • register with the College at the beginning of their training
  • manage their own learning experience
  • have access to comprehensive guidance, support and feedback from their supervisors
  • map their learning journey through the College-based virtual learning environment (VLE)

The training journey is designed to build on the knowledge and skills gained during initial medical training. It will also make training and assessment more transparent for trainees. The curriculum will guide the focus and content of all physician and paediatrician training and then lead into continuing professional development (CPD) across Australia and New Zealand.

The training program will enable trainees to develop the clinical skills and knowledge, as well as the professional qualities, attitudes and behaviours required to become competent physicians and paediatricians who will work effectively within the modern medical context.

With its roots in Constructivist Learning Theory, the core notion of the PREP program is that:

  • The learner is an active participant in the learning process as opposed to being a passive recipient of information
  • The role of teacher is no longer to didactically deliver factual information, but to facilitate the trainee's learning
  • To direct their own learning, the trainee must think reflectively about what they need to learn and also about how they learn

The PREP program is reflective of current Australian and New Zealand workplace practices and the changing regulatory requirements. It places a key emphasis on the provision of exemplary patient care within the context of an increasingly complex, multi-disciplinary team-based, working environment.

  • Trainees will be provided with a supportive educational framework that will guide them through a defined learning pathway
  • A learner-centred approach to teaching and learning places the responsibility for knowledge and skills acquisition upon the learner
  • By taking ownership of their own learning, learners are able to organise and manage their own learning needs, within a clearly defined curriculum framework
  • The learning process becomes personalised as the learner becomes self-motivated to achieve their own academic goals

A range of learning and assessment processes

The PREP program features:

  • Formative Assessments throughout the training program designed to provide feedback to assist trainee learning
  • Summative Assessments designed as external and objective indicators that a Basic Trainee has achieved a standard of knowledge that will enable the trainee to enter Advanced Training

A high quality education program to equip trainees with the best possible skill set

There is a clear expectation from the public and regulatory authorities that specialist medical training is not an accidental process but is intentional, well-designed educationally, and is supportive to trainees. The objective is to provide a high quality education program to draw people through the PREP training program. This will equip trainees with the best possible skill set to become consultant physicians and paediatricians in the workplace.
