Clinical Examination

The Clinical Examination is one of the two summative approaches to assessment for Basic Trainees and is blueprinted against the domains of the Basic Training Curriculum and Professional Qualities Curriculum. Trainees must have been successful in the Written Examination to be eligible to sit the Clinical Examination.

The Examination is designed to test a Trainee's clinical skills, attitudes and interpersonal relationships at the end of Basic Training and to provide an indication as to whether the Trainee has reached a sufficient standard to allow her or him to proceed to Advanced Training.

Examination Structure

The Clinical Examination for both Adult Internal Medicine and Paediatrics & Child Health comprises two examination cycles taken on the same day (morning and afternoon) with at least four pairs of examiners.

2 Long Cases

  • 60 minutes with a patient to take a history, examine and develop a management plan for the patient
  • 10 minutes to prepare for your discussion
  • 25 minutes to discuss the patient with the examiners

4 Short Cases

  • 15 minutes with a patient and examiners to perform a physical examination, elicit signs, interpret and place appropriate significance upon findings
  • Comment to the examiners on relevant diagnostic tests and/or nominate appropriate investigations

  • Construction of a diagnosis or differential diagnosis
  • Method of investigation
  • General management of patients

Examination Eligibility

A Trainee must:

  • make an application with the College by the due date
  • pass the Written Examination
  • be registered to practice in Australia or New Zealand
  • ensure to complete the PREP requirements during the year (such as Learning Needs Analysis, mini-CEXs)

An Overseas Trained Physician/Paediatrician must:

  • have been assessed by the RACP via the Specialist Pathway as partially comparable and be required to complete the Clinical Examination
  • have passed the Written Examination (if required)
  • be registered to practice in Australia or New Zealand

Feedback after the exam

  • An interview with a member of the relevant assessment Committee will be conducted for unsuccessful Trainees. It is the responsibility of the Trainee to arrange this interview time. Wherever possible this should take place within a month of the examination
  • Successful Trainees will be provided feedback by mail
