About the Written Examination

The Written Examination is one of the two summative approaches to assessment for Basic Trainees and is blueprinted against the domains of the Basic Training Curriculum and Professional Qualities Curriculum.

It is designed as an external and objective indicator to show that a Basic Trainee has achieved a standard of knowledge that will enable her or him to enter and successfully complete the Advanced Training program.

The Written Examination for both Adult Internal Medicine and Paediatrics & Child Health comprises two multiple-choice papers taken on the same day.

Paper 1 - 70 questions (2 hours)

  • Medical Sciences - examines a candidate's understanding of the principles of medicine and the basic sciences applicable to clinical medicine

Paper 2 - 100 questions (3 hours)

  • Clinical Applications - examines a candidate's understanding of the practice of medicine and therapeutics. Some questions are concerned with the interpretation of clinical investigation material, including ECGs and X-rays for example

All questions are a format of single-best alternative from five options which cover a range of subspecialties. For further information on the range of subspecialties please refer to the curriculum.
