Supervision

Key elements  |  Responsibilities  |  Supervisor Accreditation  |  Directors of Advanced Training

Key elements of Supervisor support

Key elements of the support from Advanced Trainee Supervisors will centre around:

  • planning and facilitating the trainee's learning path
  • the facilitation of effective teaching and learning opportunities
  • the provision of comprehensive and timely feedback on the trainee's progress and achievement of the curricula learning objectives.

Supervisor responsibilities

Supervisor responsibilities should include:

  • providing leadership and support within the workplace / geographic area to trainees
  • meeting with each trainee a minimum of 4 times per year to help them develop, implement and review effective training plans
  • guiding and facilitating development of the knowledge and skills outlined in the Advanced Training curricula, as applicable
  • completing periodic progress reports for each trainee and providing direct feedback to the trainee(s) in consultation with the co-supervisor (if applicable)
  • modelling exemplar clinical practice and procedures (being a role model)
  • reporting to the relevant RACP Education Committees
  • meeting with each trainee at the beginning of the training period to discuss and sign the 'statement of training responsibilities'
  • being aware of the training guidelines.

Accreditation for Supervisors of Advanced Trainees

At present we do not require people to have attended a Supervisor's Workshop for accreditation before becoming a supervisor of advanced trainees. In order to become an AT supervisor, your trainee(s) will need to nominate you as their supervisor as part of their annual application for approval of training.  You will be asked to formulate and agree to a learning plan with your trainee as part of the application process and agree to the Statement of Training Responsibilities.

Directors of Advanced Training

The Director of Advanced Training (DAT) is a Fellow of the College who could be appointed at a teaching hospital that has at least 5 Advanced Trainees.

The DAT is an additional and more neutral person who can advise Advanced Trainees on general concerns particularly in relationship to systems and administrative matters at the hospital and also act as an independent adviser should conflict arise between Trainee and Supervisor.

Trainees are advised to contact DATs should they need to discuss their training with an independent person.

If a DAT is not appointed in a hospital, trainees are advised to contact a Director of Physician Education at the hospital.

Currently there are no DATs in New Zealand.
