How will I learn?

Learning for a medical practitioner is a lifelong journey. It is a continuous process that starts at medical school (or even before) and continues throughout one's professional career.

The trainee-centred approach encourages the trainee to:

  • take responsibility for their own knowledge and skills acquisition
  • construct networks of knowledge and skills (schemata) by building links between new information and existing knowledge
  • modify and reorganise these knowledge networks to accommodate new information

Learning Strategies and Tools

A variety of teaching and learning tools are utilised to cater to the variety of learning needs, styles and situations that may arise in workplace training. The trainee-centred approach incorporates the following key strategies:

  • Self-directed and goal-oriented learning
  • Experiential and reflective learning
  • Problem-based and collaborative learning
  • Formal information dissemination
  • Professional development sessions
