How will I progress?

Progression will depend on the training pathway that has been decided upon. The College provides 2 main training entry points for training:

1. PREP Training Program
2. Tailored training programs provided by the Chapters & Faculties

1. PREP Training Program progression overview

The PREP Training Program requires a minimum of 6 years to complete including:

  • 3 years of Basic Training
  • College Written and Clinical Examinations
  • 3 or more years of Advanced Training

Transitional requirements in 2009 for PREP Program Trainees

2009 is the first year in which all new basic trainees will be required to enrol in the PREP Program. Recognising that 2009 is the first full year of this program, the minimum training requirements for 2009 have been modified to ensure that all Trainees are able to complete them. The letters below were sent to Trainees advising them of the transitional training requirements:

Adult Internal MedicinePaediatrics & Child Health

Note: Training assessment requirements for Trainees that began Basic or Advanced Training PRIOR to 2008 are not the same as those listed in the PREP Program. These Trainees should refer to the requirements noted in the 2004 handbook. See the Basic Requirements page or the Advanced Requirements page for more information.

Advanced Training program

  • A Trainee is eligible to apply to join the Advanced Training program upon competent completion of the 'PREP Basic Training program' - including success in the Written and Clinical Examinations.
  • Candidates will need to secure an Advanced Training position at an accredited training hospital however, this may vary according to states/regions and or subspecialties.

See the Advanced Training page for more information.

Successful completion of the entire program will allow you to be admitted to Fellowship of The Royal Australasian College of Physicians and to append the initials FRACP after your name.

More Information?

Please visit the PREP Basic Training Portal or Advanced Training pages for detailed information about these programs. Prospective applicants should be aware of the training requirements for training prior to applying.

2. Tailored training programs provided by the Chapters & Faculties

Trainees can choose to undertake a specialised training program within one (or more) of the Faculties and Chapters. The progression for each of these specialties varies.  More information can be found on their respective sites.

Chapters

Faculties

Gaining Fellowship of a Chapter or Faculty does not confer Fellowship of the RACP, however, training obtained during a program may go towards training for Fellowship of the College and vice versa.
