Supervisor Support

Welcome to the Supervisor Support site

On these pages supervisors will find information designed to support their careers as educators and their understanding of their role as a supervisor. Information is accessible via the tabs on the left-hand side of this page as well as through links embedded on each page.

The Supervisors Learning Support (SLS) unit operates out of the Education Services department of the College and is based in Sydney. The team supports the teaching and learning needs of supervisors across Australia and New Zealand. Presently, the team is working on the following projects to both support and improve educational supervision standards and practice:

  • The Supervisors Professional Development Program (SPDP): a program that will underpin the educational and governance needs of supervisors. This program is currently under development and is being guided by a Curriculum Working Group comprised of supervisors and trainees, led by the Physician Educator Expert Advisory Group. It is expected that this project will be piloted in late 2012 and launched in 2013.
  • Supervision Policy: a project to underpin the SPDP. This project is subject to College Education Committee  approval (February 2012). Potential areas of research for this policy include supervisor accreditation, Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for supervisors as educators, recruitment, rewards and recognition of supervisors.
  • Educational resource support for the College's Medical Education Officers (MEOs).
  • RACP Congress (2012): contributing to the Medical Education stream.
  • Annual Scientific Meetings: educational and resource support for Fellows facilitating workshops at these events. Topics covered include explaining specialty specific PREP program requirements, giving effective feedback and navigating the Advanced and Basic training portals.

Information on the progress of these projects and other interesting initiatives will be communicated to supervisors regularly. The December 2011 issue of RACP news contains several articles of interest on supervision.
