Supervision and Support
Overview
A comprehensive level of educationally focussed supervision and support for trainees will be provided through a four tier structure within each of the training institutes. Key elements of this support will centre around planning and facilitating the trainee's learning path, the facilitation of effective teaching and learning opportunities and the provision of comprehensive and timely feedback on the trainee's progress and achievement of the curricula learning objectives.
The four tiers are:
Director of Physician Education
1 per Geographic Network or large hospital
Focus
- Strategic / macro level educative leadership link between College and hospital(s)
Role
- Provide leadership within their workplace / geographic area
- Oversight Basic and Advanced training programs and support within network / hospital
- Drive training and support of Educational / Rotational Supervisors in conjunction with state / regional committees
- Present 2 X 3 hour Physician Educator Core training modules for Educational / Rotational Supervisors within their network / hospitals
- Establish and facilitate local support networks
- Provide advice to College Education Committee through Expert Advisory Group
- Complete program administrative work as required
Educational Supervisor (Basic / Advanced Training)
At least 1 dedicated position for Basic and Advanced training within each hospital: 1 per 10 - 15 Trainees (dependant on location)
Focus
- Operational level educative leadership and management link between College and hospital - direct link between RACP and Trainee
Role
- Oversight training program for a small group (max 10 - 15) of Basic or Advanced Trainees within their hospital
- Meet with each Trainee minimum of 4 times per year to develop and implement an appropriate plan of training
- Conduct regular formative assessments and monitoring of Trainee's progress (in conjunction with Rotational / Run Supervisor)
- Provide regular and timely feedback to Trainees within their group
- Ensures specific training program requirements are satisfied
- Provide direct guidance and support for Rotational / Run supervisors working with Trainees in their group
- Facilitate / assist with teaching and learning
- Facilitate / assist with formative assessments
- Facilitate conduct of Penultimate Year Review (Advanced Trainees)
- Assist with presentation of 2 X 3 hour Physician Educator Core training modules for Rotational Supervisors within their hospital
- Complete program administrative work as required
Rotational Supervisor
1 per Basic or Advanced Trainee as applicable
Focus
- Actively supervise and support the training of individual Trainee(s)
- Provide direct teaching and learning support to their trainee(s)
Role
- As ward consultant, be actively involved in the direct teaching of their trainee(s)
- Guide and facilitate development of knowledge and skills outlined in Basic or Advanced Training curricula as applicable
- Role model exemplar clinical practice and procedures
- Conduct formative assessments (eg MiniCEX) and provide direct feedback to Trainee
- Assist with conduct of Penultimate Year Review (Advanced Trainees)
- Monitor trainee progress and provide advice to Educational Supervisor as appropriate
- Complete Supervisor's Reports as applicable
Professional Development Advisor (PDA)
1 per Trainee. Ideally will follow trainee through both Basic and Advanced training.
Focus
- Facilitate personal and professional development support of the Trainee consistent with Professional Qualities Curriculum domains
Role
- Guide and facilitate development of knowledge and skills as detailed in Professional Qualities Curriculum
- Meet with Trainee minimum of 2 times per year
- Facilitate critical review and reflection on Trainee's practice through discussion and use of e - portfolio / reflective journal
- Utilise Multi Source Feedback assessments to conduct formative assessment of Professional Qualities Curriculum domains / learning objectives (1 per year)
- Provide timely and comprehensive feedback to Trainee
- Assist with conduct of Penultimate Year Review (Advanced Trainees).
