New fee structure for training and assessment - Adult Medicine and Paediatrics & Child Health

Over the past five years the RACP has built and delivered a highly successful and reputable training infrastructure.  These developments, which have placed the College at the forefront of postgraduate medical education in Australia, have been funded from Fellows’ College membership fees.

Fellows provide invaluable support through the delivery of training, mentoring of trainees - for which they receive no payment - and the subsidisation of training fees. Unlike universities, the College does not receive any government funding for training medical specialists.

In 2008, the cost of the College training program was $11 million.  Of this, $5 million was sourced from Fellows’ membership fees and $6 million from training fees.

A review revealed the College’s training fees were at the lower end of the scale in relation to other postgraduate medical colleges and well below other postgraduate professional qualifications such as physiotherapy and accounting.

The College Board, which includes trainee representatives, has agreed to raise training fees in 2009 to allow it to deliver more services to Fellows and Trainees.

The College will continue to subsidise training fees ($670 per basic trainee and $1340 per advanced trainee).
