The Faculty introduced a new Assessment Scheme in January 2010, the implementation of which is a staged approach with a view to full implementation in 2012.
All trainees will participate in the new Assessment Scheme to varying degrees depending on their stage of training. It is possible to make this change for current trainees because, in terms of summative assessment, the assessment during the staged implementation does not differ substantially from the previous requirements. The transition to the final version will take effect from 2012 and will apply to all trainees completing their training from 2012 onwards regardless of when they began training.
There will be further refinement of the schedule of assessments during the staged implementation, with elements of the New Assessment Scheme being developed and used firstly as formative assessments during 2010 and 2011, and then as summative assessment from 2012 onwards.
The introduction of major changes to assessment is a complex process requiring considerable consultation with Fellows and trainees as the development proceeds. The staged implementation process will facilitate the transition to the new Scheme as it is a realistic and practicable process that can be achieved over the time period and with minimal disruption to trainees.
The new Assessment Scheme will involve both formative and summative assessment. The main purpose of formative assessment is to provide feedback to guide learning, while summative assessment is concerned with decisions about progress or satisfactory completion of training. The outcome of formative assessment does not count towards progress or completion but participation in formative assessments will be required of all trainees.
For trainees who are eligible and wish to gain Fellowship in 2012, the assessment requirements to be completed this year are as follows:
