Vocational Training Haematology (cont.) Clinical Training Scheme Components of Training Core Training At least 2 years following completion of basic training and the FRACP Examination will be undertaken according to these guidelines. A trainee will be expected to undertake a period of at least 12 months of clinical haematology training with direct responsibility for inpatient and outpatient management, according to the guidelines for the joint program. A period of at least 6 months must be spent in laboratory training, with substantial direct exposure to all aspects of diagnostic haematology and transfusion medicine, as outlined in the laboratory haematology guidelines of the joint program. While a formal examination in laboratory haematology will not be undertaken, supervisors will be required to ensure that trainees have reached a satisfactory standard of performance, with an emphasis on competence in morphology and laboratory related consultations. Non Core Training Following satisfactory completion of 2 years of core training, trainees are encouraged to spend one year in non core training devoted to developing special interests in clinical or laboratory haematology, research, or further training overseas in an approved centre. It is a requirement that a specific project be undertaken during the non core year. This project may form part of a higher degree, or may take the form of clinical research or QA undertaken during the final year. The project should be submitted in written form to the supervisor and then to the JSAC prior to completion of training. Special Societies
