General Information
Location of Training
Basic training takes place in hospitals accredited by the CPT as suitable for basic training. The accreditation level of the hospital is determined on the basis of the clinical experiences, facilities and training programs available for trainees. The CPT determines the suitability of the hospital by site visits and by obtaining feedback from a Director of Physician Training, basic and advanced trainees at the site.

Basic training shall be undertaken in the following categories of hospital:

Level 3 Teaching Hospitals
Australia:
  • Up to 33 of the 36 months of basic training may be undertaken in a level 3 teaching hospital (although it need not be in the one hospital).
  • At least 3 months of the 36 months must be satisfactorily completed outside a level 3 teaching hospital. Ideally this will be in a level 1 teaching hospital or rural secondment site. If adequate rural rotations are available in the state or territory, a 3 month period must be spent in these locations. However, it is recognized that differences exist between the states and territories and therefore it is acceptable that the required 3 months may be spent in a level 2 or level 3 teaching hospital in a non metropolitan site.
  • At least 12 of the 36 months of basic training must be spent in a level 3 teaching hospital.
  • If only 12 of the 36 months of basic training are spent in a level 3 teaching hospital, only up to 3 months in a secondment term will be considered as part of the 12 months of the level 3 teaching hospital experience.

New Zealand:
  • Up to 36 months of basic training may be undertaken in a level 3 teaching hospital (although it need not be in the one hospital).
  • Up to 3 months of the 36 months are encouraged to be spent outside a level 3 teaching hospital.

Australia and New Zealand:

Level 1 Teaching Hospitals

Australia:
  • Level 1 Teaching Hospital can provide up to 12 months of basic physician training. An individual trainee may not have more than 12 months training at a Level 1 Teaching Hospital. However, this can increase to 18 months if the trainee is, in addition to normal 12 months, seconded to Level 1 Teaching Hospital from a Level 2 or Level 3 Teaching Hospital for 6 months
