General Information
Overseas Trained Doctors
Occupational/Postgraduate Training Programs in Australia
Overseas trained doctors who are working in Australian hospitals in the Occupational Training/Postgraduate Training Programs may be eligible to join the training program with some credit for training already completed overseas. Further details should be obtained from the Training Section of the College office in Australia or the College office in New Zealand. It should be noted that endorsement by the Board ofCensors of occupational training for the employer and the Immigration Department is not an indication of registration in either basic or advanced training of the College.

Graduates of Overseas Medical Schools
Graduates from overseas medical schools and those who have commenced physician training outside Australia or New Zealand, now working within either country, may be eligible to join the training program with some exemption for training already completed overseas if assessed as comparable to training in Australia and New Zealand.

Further details should be obtained from the Training Section of the College office in Australia or the College office in New Zealand.

Assessment of Previous Training and Experience
In either of the above the CPT will assess eligibility to join the training program on an individual basis.
The CPT will require applicants to submit the following documentation:
  • a detailed curriculum vitae, including full details of previous training and experience;
  • information regarding training activities, clinical experience and level of supervision;
  • information regarding the status of the hospital(s) concerned;
  • confirmation of employment and level of appointment from the hospitals where training was completed;
  • certified copies of qualifications.

The CPT may request an interview with an applicant if clarification of training and experience is required.

Exemption for Previous Training
Applicants joining the training program may be granted some exemption for previous training if it is assessed as being comparable to training in Australia or New Zealand.

Further information is available from the College offices in Australia and New Zealand.

It is unlikely that exemption will be granted for periods undertaken in Australia/New Zealand if this has not been prospectively approved as suitable training.

However, all trainees will be required to successfully complete both the Written Examination and the Clinical Examination. At least two of the six years of training must be undertaken in either Australia or New Zealand of which, one year must be undertaken in basic training except in exceptional circumstances. Some SACs/JSACs may determine that a period of advanced training must also be undertaken in or New Zealand.
