General Information
Registration as a Basic Trainee
Trainees must register annually from the commencement of the second year of basic training.

Registration Requirements
The requirements of registration include:

  • completion of an annual application form indicating the rotations to be completed during the year and signed by the DPT;
  • payment of an annual registration fee;
  • lodgement of the application form with the College offices at the beginning of each of the second and third years of basic training before the due date.
Please refer to Important Dates for Trainees* in the Training & Examiniations section of the College website for the due dates each year.
*You will need to be a member of the RACP to access this section of the website, if you don't have a password to access the Members site you can register for access.

Registration in the first year of basic training is voluntary; a fee will not be charged for registration for that year.

Non compliance with the registration deadline will incur higher administrative fees.
Trainees should keep the College offices in Australia or New Zealand informed of any change of address or contact details during the year.

Non Registration and Eligibility for the Examination
Trainees who have not been able to register previously due to extenuating circumstances must apply to the CPT for assessment of their eligibility to sit the examination. Registration is required prior to applying to sit for the examination.

Continuation of Registration
Trainees who have completed basic training but have not completed the examination requirements have the following options:
  • to register with the College as a 'continuing trainee'; or
  • to apply for approval of an advanced training program as a 'conditional advanced trainee'; or
  • notify the CPT of their intention to interrupt or discontinue training.
Registration Forms
Forms are available from the DPT at the hospital; the College office in Australia or the College office in New Zealand.

Benefits of Registration:

Contact with the Director of Physician Training
The DPT has many duties related to basic training and basic trainees, however, their responsibilities are primarily to those who are registered in the physician training program. Registered basic trainees should seek the advice of the DPT regarding any matters relating to basic training.

Publications and Information Updates

Registration allows the CPT and the College administration to keep trainees informed of matters relevant to training. At the time of initial registration trainees receive a package of information and thereafter some of the College's regular publications such as RACP News, the Annual Report and yearly application forms.

Website Member Access
Registered basic trainees have access to the password protected member area of the College website. To register for a password to access the Members site go to Member Access and fill in an enrolment form.

Trainee Representation and Elections
The Divisional Committee and the New Zealand Committee have a position for an elected trainee representative. All registered trainees of the Division are entitled and encouraged to vote in the election. Other committees of the College have positions for trainee representatives, the electorate of which is the registered trainee body.

Workforce and Health Resource Data
State and federal government departments and agencies request workforce information from the College for health workforce planning. It is in the interest of Fellows and trainees of the College that accurate data be provided.
