Training in Conjunction with Australasian Chapter of Palliative Medicine
The AChPM is within the Adult Medicine Division. The training and assessment program of the Chapter recognises the ‘physicianly’ aspects of practice in palliative medicine; the need for a wide spectrum of clinical skills and a team approach; the fact of lateral entry to palliative medicine in mid-career from other medical backgrounds; and the need for a collegiate identity. In addition to consultant physician in palliative medicine, the Chapter produces a group of specialists who add to previous experience in other fields, training in palliative medicine at specialist level. These specialists bring different and important skills, complementing those of consultant physicians.

The Chapter has two methods of entry into training. The first is through the current College training program in palliative medicine, details of which are set out in this handbook. The second method of entry requires trainees to hold Fellowship of another clinical college or faculty. These trainees will undertake an advanced training program based on the current College program in palliative medicine, modified, where necessary, to take account of the individual’s particular background. Details of this lateral mode of entry and the training program of the Chapter may be obtained from the Chapter office of AChPM or the Chapter Education Committee at the College in Australia.
