The Clinical Examination
Application for the Clinical Examination
Upon success in the Written Examination, candidates will be sent an application form for the Clinical Examination.
The closing dates for applications for the Clinical Examination are in the Basic Training section of the College website under Clinical Examination.

Fees
A fee is payable at the time of application for the Clinical Examination.

Locations and Date of Examination

The Clinical Examination is held in June each year in New Zealand and in July/August in Australia in various centres.
A further Clinical Examination for eligible candidates from Australia and New Zealand, if required, will be held in August/September each year in Australia.

Specific dates for the Clinical Examination each year are available in RACP News and in the Basic Training section of the College website under Clinical Examination, or from the Examinations Section of the College office in Australia or the College office in New Zealand.

Format of the Examination
The Clinical Examination is designed to assess clinical skills, attitudes and interpersonal relationships.
The examination format:
  • requires candidates to be examined on 2 long cases and 4 short cases within 2 examination cycles on the one day;
  • allows for assessment on one long case and 2 short cases in each cycle;
  • allows for a candidate to be examined during these 2 cycles by at least 4 pairs of examiners;
  • requires that each case will be scored independently, and the passing score will be determined by the aggregate mark obtained.
The standard required includes the breadth of knowledge, aptitude and skills sufficient for the management of adult medicine patients.

Number of Attempts

Candidates are required to successfully complete the Clinical Examination within a period of 59 months (five years) of passing the Written Examination. Candidates who do not pass the Clinical Examination within this period must again undertake and pass the Written Examination.
