General Information
Committees which Oversee Advanced Training
The College oversees and assesses advanced training in paediatric medicine through the Board of Censors (BOC) of the Paediatric and Child Health Division in Australia, the Board of Censors (BOC) in New Zealand; and the CPPT in Australia and New Zealand. These training committees receive advice from the SACs/JSACs and advanced training supervisors.

The CPPT and the SACs/JSACs provide the requirements and standards expected for advanced training. At the beginning of each year, the relevant training committee assesses and, if satisfactory, prospectively approves training programs.

Supervision by SAC/JSAC
Trainees are supervised by an SAC/JSAC during any one year of training. Completion of a 3-year program under one SAC/JSAC is required, in order that the requirements of that SAC/JSAC for subspecialty training are satisfied and the trainees can be recommended for Fellowship. Completion of training under one SAC/JSAC is often a requirement for membership of a special society or an association. Fellowship awarded upon completion of training will be undifferentiated, i.e. the certificate of completion of training will not be awarded in a subspecialty. However, a letter will be provided advising that advanced training has been completed in a particular subspecialty.

Mechanisms for Consideration of Previously Approved and Accredited Training

It is acknowledged that some trainees may wish to change the direction of their vocational training. It may be possible for previously completed and accredited training under one SAC/JSAC to be considered part of a training program by the new SAC/JSAC. This training will need to be relevant to the program of the new SAC/JSAC. Trainees should not assume that this will automatically occur and should contact the CAT of the new SAC/JSAC (in Australia) and the Chairman of the training committee (in New Zealand), in advance for advice. Trainees are advised that in such a case, their admission to FRACP will be possible after the requirements of at least one SAC/JSAC have been met.

Training Under Two SAC/JSAC Simultaneously
Dual supervision of the year by 2 SACs/JSACs may be possible, if trainees wish to satisfy two SAC/JSACs requirements. In this case Fellowship of the College may be awarded upon completion of one SACs/JSAC’s requirements with some training being undertaken post FRACP. If this occurs, one SAC/JSAC will be known as the primary and will supervise core training, while the other SAC/JSAC will be known as secondary and will supervise non core training. Trainees should read carefully the requirements for training of the SACs/JSACs they have selected for supervision of such training.

The advanced training program should be submitted prospectively to the primary SAC. Trainees should advise the secondary SAC of their intention. The CATs or Chairmen of SACs should advise trainees at the start of the year if any change is needed to be made to their program.

Panel Review (Australia)
In some states/regions in Australia, towards the end of each year trainees may be invited to participate in a review of their training with Fellows of the College. The purpose of the annual panel review will be to provide trainees with the opportunity to discuss their training and their career plans with experienced physicians who are not trainees' supervisors. The panel review is a formative tool only and the content of the review will not be reported to the supervising SAC/JSAC or the CPPT.
