General Information
Location of Training
Basic training takes place in hospitals accredited by the Committee for Paediatric Physician Training (CPPT) as suitable for basic training. The accreditation level of the hospital is determined on the basis of the clinical experiences, facilities and training program available for trainees. The CPPT determines the suitability of the hospital by site visits and by obtaining feedback from a Director of Paediatric Physician Training (DPPT), and from the basic and advanced trainees at the site.

Basic training shall be undertaken in the following categories of hospitals.

Level 3 Teaching Hospitals (Australia and New Zealand)
  • up to 36 months of basic training may be undertaken in a level 3 teaching hospital (although it need not be in the one hospital;
  • at least 12 of the 36 months of basic training must be spent in a level 3 teaching hospital.

Level 2 Teaching Hospital (Australia and New Zealand)
  • up to 24 of the 36 months of basic training may be undertaken in a level 2 teaching hospital (although it need not be in the one hospital).

Secondment Hospitals (Australia)

  • training in a secondment hospital will be on rotation from a level 3 or level 2 teaching hospital;
  • up to 18 months of basic training may be spent in secondment hospitals, ie 6 months of core and up to 12 months of non core training. Training in these hospitals will be on rotation from a level 3 or level 2 teaching hospitals.
  • 6 months (excluding tertiary neonatal units) of the 36 months of basic training may be spent at any one secondment hospital, or hospitals which form part of the rotation network.
