General Information The Mentor It is suggested that trainees choose a mentor to provide guidance through their career development. This may be the DPPT or a colleague who has empathy with trainees. The DPPT can assist in the choice of a mentor. A well chosen mentor can provide advice, coaching, encouragement, feedback, and support. It is recommended that the mentor and trainee discuss advanced training planning at the time of passing the examination. There can be significant benefits for both the mentor and trainees if the relationship is based on a genuine professional interest in education and adult learning. There needs to be trust between both parties and a clear understanding of the respective roles and responsibilities. The mentor will also have an important role as an advocate of trainees who have insufficient support from one or more supervisors, or if supervision is inadequate or does not satisfy the requirements of the training program.
